Reviewers noticed the quietness of Canon 40D, as well as better overall feel, and a better finder compared to it’s predecessors. The 40D’s very long list new/improved features makes this camera a very nice upgrade over the XTi, the 30D and their predecessors. Though most people are not going to find any one new or improved feature compelling enough to justify an upgrade from the 30D, combine all of these features and the Canon EOS 40D begins looking very attractive. There are a lot of 20D owners who sat out the 30D upgrade cycle who will give serious consideration to bringing a 40D home.

The new Canon 40D offers a very mature set of features in a camera that’s priced lower than its predecessors. It also offers as much value and image quality as competing designs that are hundreds of dollars more. Canon’s pro SLR designs have always been conservative, and they didn’t try to leap-frog the market with a higher resolution sensor; instead they stuck to a 10-megapixel sensor size that would deliver the quality that Canon fans are used to.

The EOS 40D’s kit options vary depending on your region. Europe and Australasia have the sensible choice of either the new EF-S 18-55mm IS or the popular EF-S 17-85mm IS USM, while America has the somewhat curious option of the EF 28-135mm IS USM. The latter offers a decent reach, but misses out on wide angle capabilities, but at least all three kit lenses have stabilisation, no doubt a reaction to rival DSLRs with built-in anti-shake facilities. The EOS 40D is of course also available as a body alone.

What became immediately apparent is how fast, smooth, quiet and refined the 40D is compared to my 5D or the 20D or 30D. Even if it felt the same, the 3″ LCD screen alone would be enough to justify the 40D to any full-time shooter.
